She/Her

Kayla Cayasso is an Afro-Nicaraguan writer and poet from north Florida. Her fiction writing draws on elements of Southern Gothic, horror, and magical realism to explore the psychological impacts of racism and colonialism on Black and Brown families across time.


She holds a BS in African American Studies from the illustrious Florida A&M University and a MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Central Florida. Kayla's work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize (2023) and appears or is forthcoming in Jabberwock Review, Saw Palm, storySouth, midnight & indigo, and elsewhere.

Currently, Kayla is completing her Doctorate in Creative Writing at the University of Missouri, where she is a George W. Carver Fellow.
